Adventures 5 - You don't want to know... you really don't want to know....
Monday December 3rd 2012
Monday December 3rd 2012
Well it started off badly and descended after that.
Having spent 15 minutes on the phone to Barclays being told
every 30 seconds that my call was important to them and did I know that I could
find answers on their website, I decided I’d try online chat (“ooh how very 21st
century”, I thought). Kasheeda Mirav answered my online chat request (really
they must make these names up) but to be fiar she/he was very helpful….right up
to the point where they suggested I walk to my nearest Barclays branch, thereby
rendering the last now, 25 minutes a complete and utter waste of time !!!! Did
I want to fill out their questionnaire and was there anything else they could
help me with… I neglected to answer at that point….
Mark has just phoned me to say that every time he tries to print
the project page from our rather expensively developed online project
management, crm and quotes system his internet explorer crashes. I hop on to
his PC and he tells me that he right clicks on the web page and selects print.
When I ask him why he’s trying to print this luminous green page in the first
place since this is a fully online system, he tells me, it’s so they can put
something in the filing cabinet folder for the project. Apart from the fact
that this £30k + piece of software was developed so they didn’t have to use
filing cabinets anymore, we’ve even put a big print button on the page so that
they CAN print something out when it’s needed. I’m losing the will to live… I
feel like I’m dragging the entire company up mount Everest and they’re all
attached to me with little pieces of cotton.
Never ever underestimate the capacity of individuals to
completely and utterly miss the point……sigh

Day 182 - T minus 3 days and counting
Introduction
Hi all,
here again ! I'm now the IT Manager at Luxonic Lighting PLC...
Not to get too excited about this, I am a team of one "running" the IT show for a fairly small company who make lovely fantastic the best in the world light fittings.....
A quick update to what has happened between the last and new posts....
Basically Don't Be Daft International PLC, BBC, ITV, XR3I sold off their cash machine business and sold me off with 'em... Thanks appreciated that....
Then having only been in the new company's new HQ for 11 days I left and joined Luxonic as their IT Manager.... I have also had my 40th birthday this year !!!
Kids Update
My eldest son Ryan is now 16 and has left school, we now no longer have the worry of how well or otherwise he'll do at school...no, now we have the worry of what he's going to do with himself in terms of a career.... He's applied for loads (4 jobs) as despite being all enthusiastic before, he no longer seems to want to go to college, which I think is a shame, but he's talked to "some" people who have basically put him off doing the course, and there's not a thing we can do about it.....There would be no point trying to make him do something he doesn't want to do, as it would be almost impossible to make him go... Even I struggle to get my 6ft+ son out of bed let alone going to college...
Jack or POD is now 13 and has just finished year 8. Next year he will begin his option courses at school, (his school doing them a year earlier than everyone else, christ knows why but that's the way it goes).
Wife Update
Mandy is well and still married to me ! It'll be 20 years this year...phrases like "less for armed robbery" etc etc have already been well overused (mainly by her !)
She is now working for a bunch of criminals...sorry criminal defence lawyers here in Badstoke, and I never realised how bad the levels of crime were in this town until she started working for them... I mean the scumbags we have here... stealing milk bottles off doorsteps, shouting "copper" at a passing policeman and driving at a ridiculous 32 miles an hour down a busy 30mph road.... !!! Seriously though it is surprising the amount and scale of crime that is apparently around.
